RE: QUOTE FROM PROGRESSIVE $350 W/ROAD SERVICE

The only claim we have had in 5 years with Progressive was for damage to the coach from flying debris during hurricane Wilma. Handled quickly and completely without a subsequent raise in rates.

RE: surge brakes or other?

We have the KarKaddy 3 with surge brakes. Over 15K miles and no problems at all. The only time I have even felt them is in a situation where traffic was in a speed up - slow down quickly mode at 35 to 40 mph. I slowed down to maintain a smooth transition and never felt it "buck" again. Simple and well built.

RE: Car dollies

We have a KarKaddy 3, without the folding tongue that has surge brakes. The Prius is low but I have never had a problem loading it. I too wonder why folks have so many issues with loading a dolly. I have found that if you pull the straps out far enough and lay the straps and chains out before loading the vehicle hook up is a breeze, even when it is raining. The KarKaddy has wheels that caster allowing it to track behind the coach. This puts no strain on the car's front wheels at all. The rear wheels follow along as in normal driving. The KarKaddy's wheels can be locked however to facilitate backing up when it is not loaded.

RE: Dolly towing my Kia Spectra 5?

If it is front wheel drive why put it in neutral? My Prius is front wheel drive and I leave it in park so the front wheels will not turn, but the rear wheels spin just fine. Just make SURE the parking brake is off.

RE: DP inspection in Texas?

Had mine done as above but did need a current weight ticket to get it registered. Can't help with the locations.

RE: TV CONVERTER BOX

I picked up a three panel antenna at Target when I got the converter for my mother. I don't remember the name but it was about $30 and has three flat panels connected with hinges which allow essentially 360 degree positioning. Works pretty well.

RE: Hybrid Auto for towing?

Unlike the Mariner, the Prius I tow must be towed on a dolly. The Prius fits easily on the Demco dolly which has surge brakes and you won't even know it is back there. Some don't like dollys; however, I have used ours for more than 10,000 miles and it has never been much of a problem.

RE: Best way to park MH during hurricane?

Because of job responsibilities I had to ride out Hurricane Wilma in Fort Lauderdale, i.e. I couldn't get out of town which is the first choice. I filled the fuel and water tanks, lifted the jacks and dumped all air. We picked up everything loose in the park and did reasonably well until a flying branch from a neighboring subdivision smashed the dome on my fantastic fan. That was the only damage I received; however, it did let a great deal of water into the coach until I could get it blocked and it took me several hours to clean up the mess. A few other units in the park didn't fair as well with two fivers overturned and a couple of others with flying tree limb damage. Do not stay in the unit if you can avoid it. Also, remember as the storm passes the wind will shift and you do not want to be moving the unit with the wind blowing. If the eye goes west of you that will be worse since the forward speed adds to the maximum wind speed of the storm, as well as giving you the most rain.

RE: Bad or Severe Weather???

I was living in the RV after starting a new job in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago when Hurricane Wilma went through. I filled the water tank and rode it out. Everything was OK until a tree limb was blown into the dome over the fantastic fan! I had to block that off to keep the rain out and got a little wet but that was it. I would not generally recommend it and I would not have done it but the job required me to remain in the area.

RE: Easy Way to Improve Mileage

Congress should be thinking about cost per gallon issues. Congress thinking???????? My apologies to the Moderator and the rules, but just couldn't resist!

RE: Thinking about a Monaco Diplomat 40 SKQ

Don't know how old you want to go, but our '99 Diplomat has been great. We have vacationed in it and even used it for extended periods when moving. We bought it used and have never had any significant issues. It even made it through Hurricane Wilma with just minor damage. The 8-bag system is outstanding for controlling lean and for stability while driving. I would recommend the brand and model to anyone who want a functional, well put together coach.

RE: Totota Prius number 1,000,000 but can you Dinghy it?

Also the Prius is a Mid Size car and has ample room for 5 adults. Yeah, three inside and two strapped to the roof. If I call for a taxi and a Prius shows up, I'll send them away and call someone else. Two people in the back is painful. Three is competing with the clown cars at the circus. You must be very long waisted. My son is 6' 5" and can sit comfortably behind me with the front seat all the way back. He is relatively short waisted (ie long legs - short from waist to shoulders). Also, three across the back isn't bad if none are significantly overweight. I have had 3 six footers in the back with no complaints. There are some on the Prius owner's sites that will complain about headroom in the back seat due to the hatchback design, but I have never seen any complaints about leg room or hip room in the back. It is certainly better in the back seat than the MB 320SLK I traded in on the Prius (it didn't have a back seat!).

RE: Totota Prius number 1,000,000 but can you Dinghy it?

Well, interesting debate, but the question was asked whether anyone tows one. I do, and have over 10K miles towing a Prius on a dolly. It tows beautifully and at slightly less than 3,000 lbs. doesn't even feel like it is back there even though I have only an ISB. No, the question was is anyone towing it on all 4's? The answer is you can not. Actually, I believe he asked two questions, the first being does anyone tow one behind their rig and the second asking whether it could be towed on all 4. I did indicate that I tow on a dolly. You are correct that it can not be towed on all 4. In the case of the Prius it goes beyond the normal Toyota objection and has to do with the fact that the Prius transmission is significantly different from a normal automatic.

RE: RV with all Electric range of 800 miles?

I think I might be satisfied with 150 to 250 mile range. A small 6000 watt onboard generator might extend the distance significantly if needed. I would love to roll in and fuel up overnight for "free". Of course it would only work for a few years before the parks catch on how much power you are sucking out of that 30 or 50 amp connection. what is the efficiency of an electric vehicle that needs a fuel powered generator to run? bumpy :p Actually, not too bad - essentially the internal combustion engine on my Prius is both a fuel powered generator as well as a motive power source (and I do average over 50 mpg even on the highway). While I would agree that the technology isn't currently available for an EV RV, I am happy to see that there are folks looking at ways to solve the technological problems since the likelihood is that the days of affordable fossil fuel are numbered. The real issue is when will folks wake up to that fact and create a market for efficient diesels, hybrids and EV vehicles. Keep in mind that it took from the dawn of civilization until the end of the civil war for the world's population to reach a billion. At the end of the Korean war it was at 2.5 billion. Today it is approaching 7 billion. The handwriting is on the wall and I, for one, will be happy to use efficient diesel, hybrid or EV technology to continue to travel and enjoy what open space we have left.

RE: Smart Car...not too smart for a car...maybe a toad

The other difference is that the Prius is NOT a small car. The back seat room in a Prius is amazing, particularly the leg room. My son, who is 6' 5" can sit comfortably behind me with my seat all the way back. We have never had another vehicle, including SUVs and Vans, where that was possible. We had the displeasure to ride in the back of a Prius taxi in Vegas. I'm 6'3" and my wife is 5'10". I had to lean forward so my head wasn't rubbing on the roof. The slope cuts into the headroom in the back. We were both hitting our heads on the roof with every little bump bottoming out the suspension. No luggage and it was only 20k mi old. Not nearly as much room as a Suzuki Aerio. reminds me of when I was in a car pool and one fella had a datsun hatchback. we had fistfights to avoid riding in the back seat and I am altitudely challenged. bumpy I suppose it depends on how you are built. As I said, my son is 6' 5" and has no problem with headroom in the back. I'm 6' 1" and also have no problem, but we both have long legs and relatively short torsos. The original equipment tires do produce a rough ride particularly if inflated to 40 psi or above, but there are other tires that correct that issue without much penalty in terms of mileage. I don't really want to hijack this thread but there were a lot of statements made regarding the Prius that were just urban legends and not very accurate. I am happy with filling up every 500 miles (10 gallons) whichleaves something for the $350 fill-up for the coach.

RE: Smart Car...not too smart for a car...maybe a toad

Please see my signature - my towed is also my daily driver. There are significant differences between first generation (Civic, Camry, Escape, Mariner, etc.) hybrids and the second generation hybrid (Prius). Suffice it to say that I have averaged over 50 mpg for over 40,000 miles and 70% of that has been on freeways. Hybrids do need to be driven a bit differently than regular cars and do not do well with drivers that race from stoplight to stoplight. By the way, most of those miles were registered in South Florida with the air conditioning on. The electric compressor does affect mileage slightly but not as much as you might think. The other difference is that the Prius is NOT a small car. The back seat room in a Prius is amazing, particularly the leg room. My son, who is 6' 5" can sit comfortably behind me with my seat all the way back. We have never had another vehicle, including SUVs and Vans, where that was possible.

Look through the pictures to decide. The picture in our signature was taken at Site #12. We saw many we liked better, but it was fine for our first stay at Topsail.

The sad thing is some will fall for this!!!:S And tomorrow there will be a congressional committee formed to regulate it!
